PEOPLE OF EIU

CONNECTING THE PANTHER COMMUNITY

Welcome to our second installment of People of EIU for the 2025-26 academic year. To all of you who participated in our welcome activities, like the Pickleball Court and SRC Ribbon Cuttings or our vibrant First Night celebration, we hope to see you at other events this semester and invite you to continue to stay engaged and active on campus the entire year. We have a lot of fun events and programs on deck – Homecoming is around the corner, and we’ll have details on a variety of our traditional Halloween activities for our students and the community soon. At any time, please visit either the EIU Newsletter Page or the EIU Calendar of Events to learn about fun and informative events happening.

Above all, remember that EIU is here for you. We have an amazing team of employees and countless resources aimed at helping our students succeed. Whether it's our Academic Support Center, Campus Rec activities, or our historical Booth Library, we have something for everyone. Please feel comfortable reaching out to faculty or staff for any additional help you might be seeking, and we’ll do our best to connect you with the resources you need and people who can help.

Thank you all for a great start to another wonderful year at EIU, and for representing this University with your honor, integrity, and collective aspirations.

We look forward to featuring more of our EIU Family in future issues of People of EIU. Feel free to nominate an EIU colleague or student to be featured in an upcoming issue here! And a reminder … if one or several of your colleagues is doing a terrific job here at EIU, please submit a Shout Out to recognize their efforts!

Thanks for all you do and enjoy this month’s edition!

Bobbi Kingery

Director,
Career Services

When people think of EIU Career Services, they think of Bobbi Kingery. As its director, Bobbi and her team are located in the Human Services Building on the South Quad. She also serves as member of IEC, CORE, Latino Heritage Month Committee, Instructor for EIYOU course each fall, and is the Chapter Co-Advisor for the National Society of Leadership and Success. Born in Springfield, Bobbi moved to Mattoon with fer family when she was 10 years old. She started interacting with EIU when she was in high school, taking voice lessons on campus. She then attended as an undergraduate and years later as a graduate student before working full-time on campus.  “Experiencing EIU in so many ways has led me to appreciate the sincere interest my faculty and staff took in me as a student, and it's great now to be the employee focused on the success of our current students.  I love collaborating with people on campus who are also focused on ensuring that EIU maintains its focus on student support and success.  It's really a special place!” When not helping to connect students with career opportunities, Bobbi enjoys traveling and learning about new places, cultures and people, and attending music and live theater events. “EIU is a fantastic place to figure out who you are and have the support of the faculty and staff to grow and be supported in the process. As an undergraduate I had great conversations with the Doudna Building Service Worker who saw me every night when the building closed and I was still practicing, I also knew the Dean of the College who would stop me in the hallway to chat - EIU is an incredibly supportive village which continues to be instrumental in helping students achieve their future goals.”

Omar Akil Solomon

Executive Territory Manager,
Office of Admissions

With his relentless energy and immeasurable optimism—not to mention his commitment to service—Omar Akil Solomon embodies the EIU spirit. Omar is EIU’s Admission Department’s Executive Territory Manager for suburban Chicago. Originally from Matteson, Illinois, Omar is a graduate of Rich South High School in Richton Park, Illinois and a 2009 alum of EIU’s very own Communication Studies program. “I love how EIU specializes in building community and how you're able to connect with students from all backgrounds and regions,” he said. “The joy of running into an alum and sharing stories about our respective times in Charleston always is positive and reminds me of my why I do what I do.” When not rallying prospective students, you might find Omar supporting HIS Chicago Bears (Bear Down Baby!), weightlifting, karaoke, and watching anime. While he enjoys connecting with students first and foremost, Omar has had the unique privilege of hosting a Disney and Broadway Sing-Along at Dream Con in Houston the past three years. Because he works regionally in Chicago, he’s only on campus a few times a year, but he makes the most of it by checking in on his current students and cheering on the Panthers on to victory at EIU home games. “EIU provides all the opportunities that you can find at a larger institution, but in a medium-sized package! No matter where you turn, there's always a helping hand ready to assist our students with achieving any goal. Just like the film ‘High School Musical,’ we are truly ‘All in This Together.’ EI-EI-EI U!”

In addition to fulfilling her role as student trustee for the 2025-26 academic year, Madison Veatch is a first-year Graduate Student studying Public Administration and Public Policy and also looking to get certificates in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Public Planning. Additionally, she works in the Office of Leadership and Engagement as a Graduate Assistant as well as the City of Charleston as a part-time administrative assistant. Her commitment to Charleston and broader Coles County makes sense. Madison is a 2022 graduate of Charleston High School, focused on using her community ties to further enhance “town and gown” collaboration in ways that maximize the EIU-community connection. She says all of the people she’s met at EIU have made a positive impact on her time at Eastern, indicating that her professors, faculty, and fellow students have pushed her to grow in leadership roles, get out of her comfort zone, and become an overall better student. “Without these impacts, I do not think I would have the experience I have now, or near as much leadership experience as I have now.” When asked what makes EIU special, Madison says “EIU does not make students feel like they are statistics. The University made me feel included in the community from the first day I submitted my application. I knew when I came to college I did not want to move away from home, but what I learned was that EIU would become my new home in my hometown.” When her busy schedule does afford her a break, Madison enjoys reading, traveling, and spending time with her friends, boyfriend, and family.
