People of EIU: Connecting the Panther Community

In Issue 2 of “People of EIU”, we once again recognize the outstanding students, staff, and faculty who make our campus special and highlight the Staff Senate’s employee recognition "Shout Outs" program.

Additionally, I am pleased to invite the entire campus community to the Fall Update scheduled for Wednesday, September 27. The update will begin with coffee and donuts at 8 am in the Doudna Fine Arts Center concourse with the update beginning in the Dvorak Concert Hall at 8:30 am. As in prior years, the Fall Update will honor the 2023 recipients of the Presidential Distinguished Service Award.

I hope to see you at the Fall Update and encourage you to nominate an individual for a future issue of “People of EIU”, as well as consider submitting a staff Shout Out.

People of EIU: September 2023

Jonathan McKenzie

Foundation Executive Officer & Director of Planned Giving in the Foundation

Jonathan “Jon” McKenzie has served EIU in several capacities through the years—most recently as Foundation Executive Officer & Director of Planned Giving for the Eastern Illinois University Foundation. He and his team work from Neal Welcome Center on the corner of Lincoln Avenue and Douglas Street—purposefully situated to welcome EIU students, friends, family and alumni as they head into town from Interstate 57. Together, they are responsible for championing volunteerism and philanthropy to enhance EIUs support for students and employees through various scholarships and grants. Jon is also a newly appointed member of EIU’s Staff Senate, as well as a Board Member and President Elect of CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) of East Central Illinois, Past President of the Charleston Rotary Club, and Assistant District Governor of Rotary District 6490. Jon is a resident of Mattoon and a proud Eastern graduate with numerous members of his family, including both parents, holding EIU degrees. Having earned a master’s degree in Political Science, Jon is a voracious collector of campaign buttons, posters, books. Jon says, “Everyone I know at EIU is proud to be a part of our campus community and there is a strong commitment to support one another and our students. Not to be overly sentimental, but there just aren’t many places with the special qualities you find at EIU. I’m proud to call Eastern my alma mater!

Monique Mays

Dean of Students Support Specialist, Mental Health First Aid Trainer

Monique is a double EIU alum (health sciences) who knows Eastern’s staff, faculty and administrators are truly all in for the students. She appreciates that there are so many exceptional people who work hard to ensure our students are safe, healthy and have access to the resources they need to help them succeed. Hailing from Kankakee, Monique shared that as a first-generation minority student and minority, she understands the amount of pressure our students face to cross the finish line to obtain their degree(s) and wants to use her experiences to inspire and help guide students to achieve success. In her spare time, Monique enjoys listening to true crime podcasts, walking around campus with her dog Marlo, and visiting the Charleston dog park.

Carolyn J. “CJ” Karns

Graduate Student in Chemistry/Biology

Carolyn “CJ” Karns is a graduate research assistant in Professor Michael Beck’s lab (Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry) and the presidential teaching assistant for Professor Barbara Carlsward (Department of Biological Sciences). CJ went to high school at Belvidere North High School and calls Rockford home. CJ’s obsession with the 24-hour lounge in the Union is very clear, having spent “countless hours” there to escape the real world while still enjoying the campus atmosphere. A self-described “adrenaline junkie scientist,” CJ looks forward to bungee jumping or skydiving in the future. When not hurtling toward Earth for fun, you might catch CJ snowboarding with brothers in Utah, at Ike’s playing pool with friends, running or hiking, or playing soccer or basketball. CJ says what makes EIU special is everyone’s willingness to take that extra step and the ability for all students to make genuine connections during their time here.

Cindy Almon

Assistant Athletic Director of Academic Services, Athletic Department

Cindy acknowledges that EIU is a special place and truly becomes a “home away from home” for many of our students thanks to our friendly and safe campus. She is a proud alum of EIU earning both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees (1994 and 1995). Her daughters Brooke and Kennedy attended EIU and graduated in 2022 (one with her Bachelor’s degree and one with her Master’s degree). She serves as the Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SACC) advisor, helping them to participate in service events, and she also enjoys lending a hand during home basketball events and at various donor functions. When not on the job, you might find Cindy involved in myriad activities, including walking for exercise, playing drums, growing flowers and assembling bouquets, reading, collecting vintage/antique figurines, spending time with her dog Drew, her fiancé Karl, her family, making those around her laugh, and eating Dots Pretzels (southwestern are her favorite)! She will retire from EIU in June of 2024 after 29 years of service to Eastern.

Tony Frank

Tony has worked hard and done a fabulous job with wiring in our Team Room in O'Brien Stadium! His hard work is noticed by our staff as well as our student-athletes! Thank you so much Tony, it is truly appreciated! GO PANTHERS!

Brittany Tierney

In order to make our first day of school photos happen, Brittany organized getting the admission staff out there to assist and she even did a shift herself. Without their help, it wouldn't have been as nice of an experience for the students and it was a great service of them all to volunteer their time especially on a VERY hot day!

Nathan Wehr

On Monday we took first day of school photos and Nathan was out there in the heat all day calling students over to get their photos taken. Having his positive energy there (especially during an excessive heat watch!) really made it a fun event for our campus.

William Burnside

Would like to Thank Bill and his entire team!  During this horrible heat wave (of course it had to hit the first week of classes), Bill's team was very quick to respond to our cries for help with hot classrooms and faculty offices!  Great Job!

Darren Donaldson

Darren is a tireless worker who is always going "the extra mile" to help us over in athletics. We preach "see something say something" and "sweep the corners" to our girls (Women's Soccer) often, and he exemplifies this every day he comes to work. Darren took a work order to come hang up some fixtures in our locker room a few weeks back. In doing so, he noticed that it is incredibly hot and uncomfortable for the girls, and took it upon himself to spend his own time and money purchasing industrial fans. He then donated them to our team, and they have been so very appreciated! Thank you Darren!!

Lynn Griesemer

Lynn did an outstanding job helping a student who was having a panic attack after convocation! Just wanted to say thanks for all that she does and we are fortunate to have Lynn on our staff here at EIU!

Crystal Brown

Crystal Brown did another OUTSTANDING JOB coordinating and overseeing our annual Jumpstart Welcome Weekend Program. Around 900 new students volunteered their time at 20 sites across Charleston, Mattoon, and the central Illinois region! Eastern students doing great things for our community thanks to Crystal's efforts!

Anne Lewis

Huge shout out to Anne Lewis for always being patient when I don't know what I am doing, for helping whenever I reach out, and for just being an all around amazing person. You are so appreciated!

Amy Morris

On top of being one of the nicest and most pleasant people I know, Amy's picture also appears under the dictionary entry for "team player." She took the time out of her day and helped me so much by assisting with getting our dual credit students registered. She saved me hours of time with the process. Forever thankful to have Amy with us here in Enrollment Management!

Sarah Jacobs

Sarah Jacobs prepared, assisted, and oversaw a very complex and challenging case within the Dean of Students area while also preparing for the upcoming school year! EIU is grateful to have you Sarah and thanks for all you do for EIU!

Bethany Hellman

Darren Donaldson, JP Taylor & Chad Elliott

Darren Donaldson; carpenter shop, JP Taylor; electric shop, and Chad Elliott; IT, worked together to get the Academic Advising video monitor remounted and connected to a new sound bar. It was a GREAT team effort, as it was not as easy as it should have been, an older display monitor with no working remote, made the installation more difficult than normal.

Joshua Ernst

Thanks so much for your "well-check" on my computer and settings (and me). You are patient and knowledgeable and I appreciate both. I was a little lost in the sauce, but now I'm good to go!

Robert Rigg

He helped me with a solution at the TBR... What a great guy.

Timothy Beals

Thank you so much for caring about our students. You went above and beyond to help a student. You stayed past your shift and made sure a solution was found. It is these things that make a difference, but often do not get recognized. Proud to call you, our teammate.

Danita Starwalt

Lindasy continued to check notes and provide some supervision to non-licensed staff, helped with preparation for the academic year, ran reports, and several other tasks while I was out. We could not do this without you!

Already in this academic year, she has been working hard on our internship program and creating a positive learning environment for interns. I only wish that this appreciation could have been translated into something more tangible for you, that really shows our recognition of your value.
