People of EIU: October 2024

Chloe Harnetiaux

Sophomore Public Relations major

A person in a blue sweatshirt

Description automatically generatedChloe Harnetiaux, a graduate of Hamilton County Senior High in McLeansboro, Illinois, is a student worker in EIU’s Office of Leadership & Engagement, and a sophomore Public Relations major (Communications Studies minor). She also is a member of Sigma Kappa sorority, and Vice President of Finance and Records for the Panhellenic Council.

“My favorite thing at EIU was running home to my chapter house, Sigma Kappa, last fall on bid day for my sorority. Although the entire University was very welcoming, joining Greek Life created an entire network of opportunity for friendship for me.” Chloe enjoys reading, writing, watercolor painting, and hosting movie marathons with her best friends. She says you can often find her grabbing a latte at Java B&B or studying in Doudna.

When asked what she wished she could share about EIU with others who might not know anything about the University, she jumped right in: “Eastern Illinois University is a hidden gem. No matter what you're interested in, there is something here for you! There are also so many resources here, from Career Services to helping you find internship opportunities and from basic tutoring to getting you through that tough math class—EIU can always help!”

Jennifer Seas

Director and Chief Curator, Tarble Arts Center

Jennifer Seas is the Director and Chief Curator at the Tarble Arts Center, EIU’s teaching museum on campus. After growing up on a farm in northern Illinois, she learned quickly that she enjoys spending time in the studio making artwork and writing. Apart from that, she’s reading, swimming, plant-tending, or horseback riding whenever she has the chance.

“In my role at the Tarble, I am host to so many cool events,” she said. “I love collaborating with artists, colleagues, student groups, and community members to create imaginative encounters, performances, and discussions that others can experience and share with me. One of my favorites was when we rented a school bus, stocked it with hot chocolate and snacks, and then drove a bunch of people just outside town for an outdoor performance at a local quarry. The time I dressed up with several colleagues in 80s-themed outfits to go see Xanadu at Doudna is up there as a favorite memory, too.”

When on campus, Jennifer likes to take little excursions through the secret garden on the way to get often-needed afternoon treats at Java with her EIU friends. “I’m also a baseball fan, so I try to catch a few games across campus every spring.” What does she want to share about EIU? “I’d make sure everyone knows there is a 20,000 square-foot accredited art museum on campus with fun programming that is free for everyone!”

Jeff Stowell

Professor and Assistant Chair in the Department of Psychology

Jeff Stowell is a Professor and Assistant Chair in the Department of Psychology, but also assists in other roles as Faculty Senate Vice-Chair and as EIU’s Accreditation Liaison Officer with the Higher Learning Commission. He hails from Gervais, Oregon and earned his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Brigham Young University before heading to Columbus to earn a Ph.D. from The Ohio State University.

He shared several wonderful memories throughout his 24 years at EIU, but most involve his interactions at family friendly events like homecoming parades, movies on the south quad, Jimmy Garoppolo’s playoff game in the snow, and a variety of theater performances. “EIU is a hub for connecting with family and the community.” When not in the office, Stowell enjoys cycling (road and MTB), home improvement projects, evening walks with his wife, and “fixing stuff.”

He also enjoys the fact that EIU is a community of people who are “all in” for student success, and tells everyone he can how critical a resource EIU is for its students, community and region.

David Bartz

Senior Professor Emeritus, Department of Educational Leadership

David Bartz is Senior Professor Emeritus in EIU’s Department of Educational Leadership. He attended Lakeshore High School near his hometown of Derby, Michigan on his way to earning a faculty position at Eastern Illinois University as Assistant Professor of School Services Personnel in 1978. After 27 years of service to EIU (and the region’s many current administrators), David retired as Professor of Educational Administration in 2005, and subsequently served as Professor Emeritus of Educational Leadership.

Last May, he was recognized with the ‘Friends of Education’ award from Regional Office of Education #11. He says one of the most memorable things about his EIU career was “a letter I received from a former student of nearly 40 years ago thanking me for my contribution to his professional success as a school administrator.”

He is an energetic fan of college softball and football, and was excited to see last season’s EIU volleyball team have such success. “Eastern has a great low-key environment where people can be themselves,” he emphasizes—another reason EIU has such a respected reputation for building quality relationships across all areas of the University.

The design turned out great of course, but Ryan went above and beyond in accommodating MANY MANY changes and tweaks so that we could get this final version right where we want it to be. She was quick on the changes and never once complained about us being a nuisance. Grazie mille Ryan!!!

Catrina Stanley

Thank you for going above and beyond to help me complete a task. Catrina is always willing to help out her colleagues. Financial aid is lucky to have her!

Kari Dailey

During the week prior to the start of the semester, Kari identified a possible gap in service outside of our area for a population of students and elevated the concern to me. We were able to work with the relevant office(s) to ensure the students would receive the help they needed. Kari's focus on treating students holistically revealed a possible problem, and she took the proper steps to remove that potential barrier. It was a case of being willing to think beyond her duties without exceeding the scope of her role, and it led to positive changes that will make the EIU experience better for the affected students.

Christobal Dominguez

Thank you for stepping up and helping with different projects that come your way with little notice!
