CONNECTING THE PANTHER COMMUNITY

Welcome to our first installment of People of EIU for the 2025-26 academic year! This is our 17th issue of People of EIU since we first started highlighting our talented faculty, staff, and students this way in August 2023. Like you, I am excited for the upcoming year, and proud of the accomplishments we’ll achieve together, united as Panthers and confident in our collective ability to positively impact the world we share.

We look forward to featuring more of our EIU Family in future issues of People of EIU. Feel free to nominate an EIU colleague or student to be featured in an upcoming issue of People of EIU here! And a reminder…if one or several of your colleagues is doing a terrific job here at EIU, please submit a Shout Out to recognize their efforts! You can check out the July 2025 Shout Out Video here.

Welcome to the new year—thanks for all you do and enjoy this month’s edition!

People of EIU: July 2025

Gisela Alvarez

Exhibitions & Collection Manager,
Tarble Arts Center

Gisela Alvarez is the Exhibitions & Collection Manager at the Tarble Arts Center. Originally from DeLand, Florida, she earned an undergraduate degree in art history and studio art from Stetson University before moving on to achieve a master’s degree in art history from the University of Florida. “When I first started at EIU, I had my sights set on Chicago after a few years of experience. However, I've made an incredible group of friends, I'm very fond of my EIU colleagues, and I fell in love with Charleston and the community. So much so that I convinced my sister to move from Chicago to Charleston, and she also loves it here!” Gisela says one of her favorite moments was going on a tour to the top of Old Main. Outside of the arts, she participates in CrossFit at a local gym and has earned a level one trainer certification. She claims a wide variety of interests, including skiing, horseback riding, and anything related to fantasy—whether it's TV, books, video games, or movies. Of course, Gisela loves attending EIU events with her friends and colleagues, especially during the homecoming season. “The Tarble is an excellent resource for students, faculty, staff, and audiences outside EIU. We have workshops, free yoga classes, art exhibitions, social and creative events, and more! There are quiet areas to reflect and study, and a play space for our younger audiences.” And if that’s not enough of a pitch? “We can even give tours of our vault!”

RJ Vanderwerf

SaaS Platform Administrator, ITS

RJ Vanderwerf is EIU’s SaaS Platform Administrator, operating as part of the ITS team located in the Student Services Building. Originally from Hinsdale, Illinois, he lived for a time in Ontario, Canada, and graduated from Ocean Springs High School in Mississippi. He says the EIU Blue-B-Que is just one great example of the numerous events put on by the University to help foster camaraderie amongst staff/faculty. “It allows us to meet face to face with the people we may not see on a daily basis and have a nice meal together. These events are always great to attend!” In his spare time, RJ enjoys drawing, painting and 3D printing projects. “I've really enjoyed working with Booth Library on supporting the CSI lab. Being able to share my knowledge of 3D printing with staff and students has been a blast.” When asked what he would share about EIU with others who might not know anything about the University, he says “there is so much! But if I had to choose just one thing - the people who work here are the best! Plus, we have a literal castle…beat that!” RJ asserts.

Austin Cheney

Dean, Lumpkin College of
Business & Technology

Austin Cheney is Dean of EIU’s Lumpkin College of Business and Technology, and his office is in Lumpkin Hall 4801. He currently serves as past chair of the Effingham County Chamber of Commerce. Originally from Upper Sandusky, Ohio, Austin says any time he can make a positive difference for others makes for a great day for him…and “EIU presents many opportunities for this type of impact!” His favorite pastime is enjoying the casual conversations around campus and getting to know others at EIU on a personal level. When not on campus, Austin enjoys articles, books, and listening to podcasts on leadership, whether general or specific to higher education, and admits to being a bit of a college and professional football fan. When asked what he likes to share with others about EIU, he says “You can read about EIU’s programs and services on the website, but you can’t experience the wonderful alumni, faculty, staff, and students without visiting!”

Rebecca Aba Gaisie

Graduate Student,
Master of Science Sustainability

Rebecca Aba Gaisie is a Graduate Assistant in Enrollment Management and in her second year of EIU’s Master of Science in Sustainability–Energy Management program. A member of UNA-USA, the UN Club at EIU, and founder of The Remma Pact (a youth sustainability and humanitarian initiative), she stays very active in and around the EIU community. A graduate of St. John Bosco School in Tema, Ghana, Rebecca says she’s had several special moments at EIU, but one stands out in particular: “A truly special moment for me was representing Eastern Illinois University at the United Nations ECOSOC Youth Forum in New York. As an international student, I felt so proud and supported knowing my university believed in my voice and leadership potential on a global stage. I also cherish the mentorship and kindness I’ve received from faculty and peers; they’ve made EIU feel like home away from home.” An enthusiastic advocate for climate justice and sustainable energy, Rebecca enjoys writing poetry, mentoring fellow students, podcasting about international student life, and volunteering with global youth networks. But her favorite thing to do? “Baking some delicious pies with my grandma Mindy Mckibbin.” Rebecca says EIU is a place that truly sees people not just as students or employees, but as individuals with potential, dreams, and a story. “The support, diversity, and opportunities here create an environment where you are not only prepared for success but encouraged to lead and give back. It’s a hidden gem where global change can begin in a small Midwestern town.”

Marqeita Morris

Here's a shout out to Marqeita Morris for always being up beat and having a great attitude. Marqeita always does her job in a very professional manner and along with this she always manages to spread a little sunshine to the people that she interacts with. Last week I asked Marqeita to assist me with something that was not part of her job duties and that many people would have put very little effort into. She was not able to solve my problem right away so I thanked her and told her that I would figure something else out. The next day she contacted me and told me that she had tried and tried but she still could not come up with the solution that I was needing. I had assumed that she would let it go as soon as our conversation was over, but she put much more effort into assisting me after the conversation was over. Marqeita, I just want to let you know that your extra effort along with your great attitude are very much appreciated by me!
