PEOPLE OF EIU

CONNECTING THE PANTHER COMMUNITY

Welcome to our third installment of People of EIU for the 2025-26 academic year! We’re at the midpoint of the semester, and I hope you all had a chance to enjoy this year’s Homecoming festivities. Several alums made it back to campus to celebrate with our community, employees and students, and overall, it was a wonderful day to celebrate EIU with our fellow Panthers.

There are also great things happening across campus. Our new First-Gen Hub opens November 7, our Freshman Connection program is gaining national attention, and EIU earned the 2025 Campus Prevention Network Seal of Prevention for our efforts to uphold and enhance student safety and well-being. I applaud all of the phenomenal work done by so many of EIU’s talented people.

As a special element this month, our student feature focuses on former Panther student-athlete Will Klein, who just etched his name into the annals of baseball history with his clutch performance in the World Series last night in relief work. After 18 innings—tying the longest game by innings in World Series history—Will became an unexpected hero who kept Los Angeles alive long enough for Freddie Freeman to walk it off with a home run that will echo through October lore. The full write-up on his performance is available here.

At any time, please visit either the EIU Newsletter Page or the EIU Calendar of Events to learn about what’s happening across campus. We look forward to featuring more of our EIU Family in future issues of People of EIU—feel free to nominate an EIU colleague or student to be featured in an upcoming issue here, or submit a Shout Out to recognize their efforts! People of EIU will be back next month for one more issue before the winter break!

Will Klein ex. 2020

Former EIU Baseball Player
Pitcher, Los Angeles Dodgers

In a game that felt like it might never end, former Eastern Illinois University student-athlete Will Klein turned a World Series marathon into his personal masterpiece. Last night, Game 3 between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Toronto Blue Jays stretched to 18 innings and six hours and thirty-nine minutes — tying the longest game by innings in World Series history. Amid the exhaustion and pressure of the sport’s biggest stage, Will became an unexpected hero and another standout EIU student-athlete making a name for himself as a professional.

Dianne Timm currently serves as acting chair of Human Services and a professor for EIU’s College Student Affairs and Higher Education and Community College Graduate Programs. Originally from Stoughton, Wisconsin, Dianne earned an Elementary Education Degree from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, A Master’s Degree in Counseling from the University of Nebraska at Kearney, and a Doctorate in College Student Affairs Administration from the University of Georgia. "I love the sense of community we have at EIU, where people take care of one another and assist each other in finding their success."

In her 15 years as a Panther, Dianne says her favorite tradition is EIU Homecoming, where people with EIU connections can all come together to celebrate the place they love. On campus, she also enjoys lunch with colleagues in the EIU Food Court, spending time at Booth Library, and walking the Panther Trail. Off campus, she loves to paint, create new things, and travel. In fact, in the summer of 2023, Dianne walked 300 miles of the famous Camino de Santiago in Spain. In trying to define what makes EIU unique? "There is just special feeling being a part of this community that is hard to explain," she said. "But it’s rooted in working hard, caring deeply for one another, and wanting to make the student experience the best it can be."

"There are simply so many cool stories and a ton of history about this institution," he added. "Things that even I likely don't know—it was only this year where I found out that we had an unofficial mascot that was a dog!" Matt encourages people to learn about the history of the institution and some of the people that went here. "It will make you feel even more connected to our institution!"
