CONNECTING THE PANTHER COMMUNITY

As we approach the end of another semester, I am filled with pride for all that we have accomplished together. The resilience and dedication demonstrated by our students, faculty, and staff throughout this academic year have been truly remarkable. As we bid farewell to another cohort of graduates who will embark on new journeys, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to each of them for their hard work and achievements. May 4 marks not only the culmination of their academic endeavors but also the beginning of exciting new chapters in their lives.

Additionally, I am thrilled to invite all EIU faculty and staff to join us for our Employee Appreciation Picnic at the Campus Pavilion on May 8, a wonderful opportunity to celebrate your dedication and hard work.

But before that, mark your calendars for April 20 and 24 for two exciting events: the Community Appreciation Softball Game and the Employee Appreciation Baseball Game. On April 20 at Williams Field, our EIU Panther Softball team will take on Tennessee Tech in a doubleheader. The first 100 fans through the gates will receive a free hot dog. Then, on April 24th at Coaches Stadium, join us for the Employee Appreciation Baseball Game as our EIU Panther Baseball team faces off against Illinois Wesleyan. The first 200 fans will receive a free hot dog. It's sure to be a couple of afternoons filled with fun and celebration.

Thank you for your unwavering commitment to excellence, I hope you have a great summer.

People of EIU: March 2024

Colleen Kattebraker

Instructor, Advisor and Internship Coordinator, Kinesiology, Sport & Recreation

Colleen Kattenbraker wears several hats at EIU—she serves as Instructor, Advisor, and Internship Coordinator for EIU’s Kinesiology, Sport & Recreation program in Lantz Arena. A Charleston native, Colleen grew up attending events on campus and considers herself fortunate to be employed here. She says getting to know and help students is one of the best aspects of her job. “EIU is all about people.” When not serving her alma mater as an employee, Colleen enjoys running, baking, spending time with family, and helping at Home Church. She encourages others to do what they love on campus and with others in your EIU circle—attend athletic events, go to Homecoming, and enjoy the holiday festivities around campus. “EIU is just a great place. You really get to know people and you're not just a number. People on campus are readily accessible and always willing to help.”

Breanne Pedigo

Office Manager, Department of History

Breanne Pedigo is the Office Manager for the Department of History in Coleman Hall. A lifelong Charleston resident, she graduated from EIU with a Bachelor of Arts in History (2018). She loves getting to work with so many different people across campus. “We have some really amazing faculty and support staff, [and] I really appreciate the positive force for change AFSCME and UPI provide on campus.” When Breanne is not at home enjoying time with her pets, she spends a lot of time with friends playing games. “I [also] really enjoy attending the Percussion Ensemble Performances in Doudna when those events come around. We have such talented faculty and students!” One thing Breanne encourages everyone to do at EIU is to check out the events Booth Library hosts—“they have several great events and resources.”

Katie Shaw

Professor, Fashion Merchandising

Katherine (Katie) Shaw is Professor of Fashion Merchandising in EIU’s Department of Art & Design, located in the Doudna Fine Arts Center. She earned a B.S. and an M.S. from Eastern Illinois University and went on to earn a Ph.D. in retail merchandising from Florida State University’s Department of Textile and Consumer Sciences. Katie’s parents met and fell in love at EIU so there really has not been a time in her life when Eastern has not been a part of it. She grew up in Champaign but made visits to campus regularly and would hear stories about her mom and dad’s adventures during their time in Mattoon and Charleston. Following in her parents’ and brother’s footsteps, Katie’s own EIU experience was amazing. “The professors and mentors I had during my years here inspired me to become a professor. I hope our EIU family legacy continues, this campus and the people here will always hold a very special place in my heart.” When not at EIU, Katie enjoys family time, vegetable & herb gardening, reading, travel, and “Retail Research” (i.e. shopping). “The community we have here at EIU is unmatched. We care about each other, and I think that shows.”

Luke Denny

Junior Business Analytics and Information Systems Major

Hailing from New Lenox, Illinois and a graduate of Providence Catholic High School, Luke Denny is a junior Business Analytics and Information Systems student in EIU’s Finance Department. As an EIU student, he takes his engagement on campus seriously—he serves as a Student Ambassador for EIU and for Study Abroad and is a member of Sigma Chi (Order of Omega) and Delta Sigma Pi, as well as a part of the Deans Student Advisory Board and Greek Life Task Force. “What I love most about EIU is the people. Being able to walk from Old Main to Lawson Hall and run into [so many] people you know and have meaningful conversations.” Building friendships with the students and professors in classes and having these relationships that will last a lifetime is an important part of Luke’s EIU experience. He also enjoys playing basketball at the Rec Center, watching the Chicago Blackhawks, and traveling. “[Students] can grow so much as a person and a leader because of the resources, support, and compassion that EIU offers to everyone on campus. There is no place like EIU.”
