CONNECTING THE PANTHER COMMUNITY

As we bid farewell to winter and eagerly await spring, I want to thank each and every one of you for contributing to the resounding success of our Admitted Student Day on March 9. The warmth and enthusiasm extended by the EIU community plays an instrumental role in making our admitted students feel welcome and valued. Your dedication and support are commendable, and I am proud to witness the spirit of inclusivity and excellence that defines our institution.

As we approach spring break, I encourage everyone to take this time to unwind, recharge, and indulge in moments of fun and relaxation with loved ones. Whether you're embarking on a getaway or enjoying a staycation, I hope this break serves as a well-deserved opportunity to rejuvenate your spirits.

When we return, let's rally together to continue supporting our students as they navigate the second half of the semester. Your encouragement and guidance is invaluable in nurturing their growth and success.

Once again, thank you for your dedication, passion, and commitment to our shared mission.

With appreciation,

People of EIU: March 2024

John Blue

Senior Diversity & Inclusion Officer and Executive Director of the Office of Inclusion and Academic Engagement

John is EIU’s inaugural Senior Diversity & Inclusion Officer and Executive Director of the Office of Inclusion and Academic Engagement, with an office located in Blair Hall. John hails from Tampa, Florida, and says he is genuinely enjoying the EIU experience. “Our student body is surprisingly diverse. The institution’s commitment to mirroring the demographics of faculty and staff are helping EIU to become a blueprint of what a regional institution of higher education should strive to become.” John loves interacting with students on campus and having deep and meaningful conversations revolving around their sense of belonging, student organization development, and their future plans for careers or graduate school. In his spare time, John also loves to travel, dine out, and attend football games and track meets. More information about John—including his distinct academic and work history—is available in EIU’s official November 2023 news release announcing his hire in this critical role for EIU and its students.

Danita Starwalt

Assistant Director,
Department of Procurement, Disbursements & Contract Services

Danita is Assistant Director in EIU’s Department of Procurement, Disbursements, and Contract Services in the Business Office. A lifelong Cumberland County resident and a graduate of Cumberland High School, she currently lives in Greenup with her husband Brad. One of her proudest moments was when her oldest daughter earned her Master’s Degree in Psychology here at EIU. She enjoys the encouragement of her colleagues and others, who all help to remind each other that even when the office is extremely busy, EIU’s people and teamwork help create a great work atmosphere. Danita says she is blessed with six grandchildren, who are the highlight of her and her husband’s lives. When they’re not busy running around with the grandkids, they enjoy being involved with community activities and local fund raisers. “EIU has so much to offer along with numerous faculty and staff willing to assist you achieve your goals. I have met some of the most wonderful people that are willing to help others succeed. It’s an awesome feeling to know there are others here on campus willing to lend a helping hand.”

Lana Beasley

Program Coordinator,
The Graduate School

Program Coordinator is Lana’s official title, but she also serves EIU as Certification Officer for Graduate Students and the Graduate Assistantship Manager (as well as anything else required in the Graduate School in Blair Hall). Charleston is her hometown — she was born and raised here, graduated from Charleston High School, and earned a B.A. degree in General Studies and a Master of Sciences degree in Family and Consumer Sciences at EIU. “I used to view EIU in awe and never thought that as an adult I would spend the majority of my life studying and working on this campus, or that it would become such a key part of my life,” she said. “I am proud to be an EIU alumni and to be able to work here.” Lana also enjoys the friendships she has made after spending the last 19 years in the Graduate School, and remains close to many of her former colleagues. When not at EIU, Lana spends her spare time attending ball games and events with her grandchildren and traveling to beach destinations with her husband.

Dalton Piercey

Senior Psychology Major

Dalton is a senior at EIU who made his way to Charleston after graduating from Blue Springs High School in Missouri. The two most wonderful things that have happened to Dalton since enrolling at EIU are joining Delta Chi and getting involved as a volunteer for Royal Family Kids (RFK). After taking a two-year break during the pandemic, Dalton’s return to EIU saw him become more involved as a leader of his fraternity chapter and with Interfraternity Council, which he says has taught him so much about life and people. Through one of his fraternity brothers, Dalton got involved with RFK out of Orland Park, which is a one-week summer camp for children 7-11 in foster care who have experienced abuse and neglect. “More than anything, I really wish I could relay how much value joining Greek life can add to your life,” he said. “This sub-community of EIU is a flourishing unique body of people that can and does help individuals grow personally, socially, and academically.” A unique thing about Dalton? He’s been collecting PEZ Dispensers for 23 years and owns over 1,000 unique and rare dispensers. He spends his spare time hanging out with family and friends, working as a bartender at the Charleston Country Club, and playing video games.
