CONNECTING THE PANTHER COMMUNITY

Welcome to our last installment of People of EIU for the 2024-25 academic year. I am always excited to see our campus grow vibrant with the return of Spring and warmer weather, and so proud of our Panthers who will be graduating May 10. Each of you has shared your enthusiasm, skills and ideas throughout the year, adding pieces of your unique culture and spirit to our great campus. Thank you for everything you offer EIU, and for being such a critical part of EIU’s legacy.

As we head toward finals and—for most of you—a well-deserved summer break, please know EIU offers a variety of academic and other resources that can help you cross the finish line strong. Please feel comfortable reaching out to faculty or staff for any additional help you might be seeking, and we’ll do our best to connect you with the resources you need and people who can help.

Thank you for another great year at EIU, and for representing this University with your honor, your integrity, and your collective aspirations.

For those of you beginning your story’s next chapter after commencement, know we are proud of you and we will always be here for you. For those returning in fall to continue or complete their degree programs, we look forward to furthering our relationship and cheering you along on your way to creating meaningful lives, careers, and even more great EIU memories.

People of EIU: April 2025

Jenn King

Assistant Athletic Director for Academics
Senior Women's Administrator

Jenn King is EIU’s Assistant Athletic Director for Academics/Senior Women's Administrator and Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Advisor. During each of her academic semesters on campus, EIU student-athletes have posted cumulative semester GPAs over 3.00 with numerous teams and individuals earning national and regional academic honors by their respective coaching associations, conference or national organizations. While her "work home" is in the Lantz Athletics Complex, she originally hails from Connecticut. "While I came here as an assistant volleyball coach, I ended up loving EIU so much I made a career change to academics in order to stay here!”

Jenn tries to attend as many Panther Athletics events as possible, which she feels further enhances her connection to the University and its myriad students. But that’s not enough in terms of sports, she says, admitting "I watch every sport I can get my eyes on, especially women's sports…but my guilty pleasure is watching Bravo Reality TV." She and her husband Dan have two children, and she’s happy that EIU is "a place where my two daughters feel like Groniger Arena is their second home!"

Dr. Rigoberto Chinchilla

Professor, School of Technology

Dr. Rigoberto Chinchilla is a Professor and leader of EIU’s M.S. in Cyber Security degree program at EIU. Now a U.S. citizen, Rigoberto was born in El Salvador before eventually earning a B.S. in Electronic Engineering in Costa Rica, an M.S. in Electrical Engineering from Ohio University, and a dual Ph.D. from Ohio University (Electrical and Industrial Engineering). Two interesting facts about Rigoberto—he played in the Basketball World Championship in Argentina for seniors 55+, and he spent time in a refugee camp as an orphan (as a victim of the civil war in El Salvador)—and his autobiography about that experience is available on Amazon.

One of his proudest moments, he says, is participating in EIU’s Fall 2024 commencement after earning an additional B.A. in Philosophy at 63 years old. A self-described gym rat, he also enjoys playing the piano and singing. Other hobbies include "hitting the Rec Center, running the Panther Trail in the summer, and getting involved with the men’s basketball team." When asked what he'd share about EIU with others? "EIU is located in a wonderful, peaceful, safe and nice town."

Lynne Cameron

Assistant Professor, Communication Disorders & Sciences

Lynne Cameron’s long list of duties at (and extending outside) EIU includes Assistant Professor, Medical Internship Supervisor, CDS Curriculum Committee chair, CHHS Curriculum Committee chair, University Grade Appeal Committee chair, Illinois Speech-Language-Hearing Association Professional Affairs Track Chair and Vice President-Elect for Professional Affairs. Her office is on the second floor of the Human Services building.

"Collaborating and seeing how many amazing individuals spend their careers working to make EIU the wonderful place that it is especially heartwarming." A lifelong Charleston resident, she says she started attending EIU in preschool. "I went to the lab preschool through the College of Education. It was a fun surprise when my life came full circle, and I became faculty here!” Her personal Interests and hobbies include spending time with her family, learning, reading, volunteering, and hiking. "EIU is a hidden gem, and it's truly because of the people of EIU. They're caring, hard-working, and goal-directed…and all of that helps to make EIU better each day."

Reagan Robson

Junior Political Science Major

Reagan Robson is a junior Political Science major and Student Ambassador for Admissions focusing on Pre-Law. Recently elected as Student Body President, she also serves as President of EIU’s Pre-Law Society, Chair of the Alumni Relations-Student Government Association, and Vice Chair of the Student Action Team. From Coal City, Illinois, her personal interests include politics, cooking & baking, and listening to music.

She says being a legacy student following her brother’s time at EIU has really helped her connect with him through the EIU stories they can now share and laugh about together. "I love Student Government Associations and being able to plan events for alums and current Panthers!” When asked what she’d share about EIU that other people may not know? "Every day you step onto campus it can unfold something great. I think the diversity is what brings such uniqueness to this University, and I have ‘forever stories’ to share even after my time here is done!"

Ngozi Onuora

Thank you for your kindness and willingness to welcome me into the Dept. of Learning, Teaching & Foundations. It has been a great first week thanks to you. Eager to help you and your department flourish with your leadership. Thank you!

Frankie Wilson

EIU is so fortunate to have Frankie Wilson on staff! Her work leading the restructure of EIU 1111 has been amazing. She is student focused, collaborative and innovative - the course is going to be fantastic. She is also a strong advocate for our students and their success. It's exciting to hear her ideas, see her passion and know that our students will have a better experience because of her efforts.

Lana Beasley

We had a situation where we needed answers quickly regarding a graduate student. Knowing you can call Lana with any question and that you will be greeted with a smile and kindness is very reassuring. Lana is EIU.

Mark Kattenbraker

Coming in clutch and sponsoring the Marc Lore Timberwolves Owner presentation and making the jersey door prize possible for a EIU student.

Marsha Toner

Marsha recently fixed a report for us that has been in need of some upgrades for years now. It was probably quite the monstrosity to pick up and pick through. Marsha, thank you for always taking the time to listen to our needs and understanding our processes so that these programs and processes can keep on working. *We* keep on working because of you! Thank you!

Chadd Gaston

Chadd came by my office to replace my computer today. He was on time and extremely efficient as well as being very friendly in conversation. He said that the process would take 20 minutes, and he was right. It was a pleasure to meet him and to know that we have such friendly and extremely competent people on campus. Thanks!

Shannon Bell

Shannon is truly the most organized and knowledgeable person I have ever had the pleasure of working with. Over the past few months, as she transitions from the Dean's Office of the College of Education to the School of Extended Learning, she has continued to excel. Despite taking on the responsibilities of her previous role while learning the ropes of being a director, Shannon has been nothing short of phenomenal. Her hard work and dedication make my job so much easier, and I'm sure many others would agree. Thank you so, so much for all that you do, Shannon!

Angela Hallowell

I've never had the opportunity to work with Angie Hallowell until this morning when I called her in a panic to see if she could help with a possible scheduling snafu. Angie jumped right in and went out of her way to do what she could to take care of things--even heading to a neighboring building to figure the situation out for me. That is the kind of colleague you want and a person who makes EIU great!! Thank you again, Angie!!

Ngozi Onuora

Dr. Ngozi Onuora has been a true blessing to the Teaching, Learning and Foundations department. She constantly goes above and beyond in not only her role as the Department Chair but taking on an abundance of extra roles with a constant smile on her face. She has the ability to make all feel extremely valued, heard, and important in both the department professional setting, as well as on a personal level. She truly and genuinely cares about all from faculty to students. Her constant positive attitude and overall joy for education is infectious and she has made an extremely positive impact on myself both professionally, as well as personally. Her knowledge, creativity, and disposition make me excited for the future of the Teaching, Learning and Foundations department with her as our leader!

Julia Awalt

A great big shout out to Julia for helping a student navigate through a tough situation. Thank you for directing them to us so we could help. It takes a village!

James Beech

Thank you, James, for helping me out so quickly (and kindly)! You went above and beyond - and have my sincerest gratitude!

Makayla McPhedran

Makayla knocks out requisitions and PO's so quickly. She keeps our department moving. Thanks Makayla!

Christy Hooser

Dr. Hooser is an amazing Associate Dean and Teacher Licensure Officer. She is truly the "glue" that holds all of the educator preparation programs at EIU on track, incompliance with the Illinois State Board of Education's changes and mandates, and provides optimism and energy for all of the educator preparation faculty and staff at EIU. Thanks, Christy, for all you do for all of us and our educator candidates!

Mallorie Fonseca

Mallorie is AMAZING - she is always wiling to assist with issues and questions about Academic Works and Scholarships. Thank you for assisting campus in such an important roll. WE APPRECIATE YOU!!

Michael Cowan

Your skills, ability and knowledge are essential to the functions of the office, and your efforts are greatly appreciated. Thank you.
