PEOPLE OF EIU

CONNECTING THE PANTHER COMMUNITY

Welcome to our February issue of People of EIU—our second issue of the 2025 calendar year. Like you, I’m looking forward to the spring and the return of warmer weather, when campus once again will be alive with renewed energy and activity. But cold weather hasn’t stopped us from adding new and exciting events to the EIU Calendar

If you’d like to recognize a colleague or student for their notable commitments to EIU, please nominate them for a future People of EIU feature or Shout Out to acknowledge them for their EIU passion.

And as always, a note of genuine appreciation for all you to do for EIU and for each other. Your contributions to our campus and community are critical, and the work we do is as important as ever for our students, our communities, and our world.

Thanks,

Denise Harris

Assistant Bursar, Business Office

Denise Harris is EIU’s Assistant Bursar in the Business Office, working out of Old Main. Already an alum of EIU, Denise is working toward her graduate degree in Talent Development. Originally from Charleston and now a resident of nearby Kansas, Illinois, Denise says one of her favorite moments on campus was when her son and husband met her for lunch, and when walking back from the Food Court President Gatrell raced her then-four-year-old son on foot back to Old Main. "Racing a young child in a full suit on campus just shows how down to Earth he is," Denise said. When not overseeing friendly campus sprints, Denise enjoys reading and spending time with her friends and family. "The EIU Homecoming Parade and Tailgating is one of my family’s favorite events. Everyone who hasn’t experienced it should definitely try to go!" One of the things she enjoys about EIU is the relationships. "We’re all extremely busy, but that doesn’t stop us from doing everything we can to make each student’s time here meaningful and special."

Parys Daniels

Graduate Assistant,
Office of Leadership &  Engagement

Parys Daniels is a Grad Assistant for The Office of Leadership and Engagement, where she mainly oversees the campus food pantry and helps with volunteer engagement. She is currently in the second semester of a master’s degree program in Human Services after earning a bachelor’s degree from EIU in 2023. From Kankakee, Illinois, Parys says her favorite EIU memory was attending her first-ever swim meet during her senior year of college—a unique experience for her as a Stevenson Hall RA committed to supporting her residents. As far as personal interests or hobbies—"I love to travel! If I could travel every single day I would. I just love learning about the world. I also am a sucker for volunteering. I love giving back to my community! In order for everyone to be the best versions of themselves, we must all uplift and support each other." Parys would love to collaborate with different RSOs to support EIU’s campus food pantry—"It takes a village to run a pantry, so I would love for different organizations to donate their time to volunteer or help in restocking to keep this critical campus resource." In sum: "EIU may be small, but please believe me when I say that there are more things to do than just eat in Charleston. EIU has events going on all the time! Please get engaged!"

Nichole Mulvey

Professor & Graduate Coordinator, Communication Disorders & Sciences

Nichole Mulvey contributes to EIU as a Professor and Graduate Coordinator in the Department of Communication Disorders and Sciences. Originally from Newton, she says when she’s not posted in her office on the second floor of the Human Services Building, you might find her working from one of the quiet and comfortable places in Booth Library. In addition to her faculty and Graduate School roles, she’s also advancing the EIU mission through her work on the Faculty Senate, as an Electronic Writing Portfolio (EWP) Reviewer, and as a convention coordinator and member of the executive board of the Illinois Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ISHA). Myriad professional duties aside, Nichole says "I love going to work every day because of the opportunity to work with such caring and intelligent people. We support each other like a family!" When not on campus, Nichole spends a decent amount of time sitting in local gyms and fields watching her kids participate in all the things they love. "I love to read and am often reading a book at night and listening to a different audiobook on my commute. I also love to play tennis (when I can find the time!)." Asked about what makes EIU special—"If you want to feel supported and feel like your faculty really know you, EIU is the place to be!"

Josh has great customer service and was excellent to work with. Thanks dude!

Conor Baltz

Big congrats to Conor from the whole CLAS Dean's Team on successfully shepherding the installation of the Doudna's new projection screen in the Dvorak Concert Hall! Jeffrey Browning

A BIG KUDOS to Jeff and the Grounds Crew for their GREAT WORK in clearing the sidewalks after the big storms we've had. I had taken their efforts for granted until I stepped off campus to grab lunch and had to traverse the ice and snow on the sidewalks on the other side of 4th Street. Thank you for keeping our health and safety in mind and keeping our sidewalks clear!

Amanda Wolf

Your efforts and hard work in helping facilitate and secure external funding are greatly appreciated! Grant seeking is never a simple task in a university setting, and you have helped make it a smoother process. We are greatly indebted to you for your help and assistance. Many thanks!

He is so helpful and insightful when meeting with each of these students and their families. When each of these potential future Panthers sit down to make that final college decision, Jeff will be one that makes a big difference for those who choose EIU! We were especially grateful for his willingness to meet with Parker on Monday after asking him 15 minutes prior to her showing up at his office door. You're amazing, Jeff! Thank you!

Makayla McPhedran

Makayla REALLY stays on top of her workload and churns out requisition and POs so quickly! We had a sudden change in a grant with just a short time to make line item and vendor changes before the grant expired. Makayla made sure that everything went through quickly and seamlessly. Thanks Makayla!

Melissa Schmieder

During new hire orientation, Melissa was very informative and knowledgeable when it came to our benefits. I have never met anyone who has understood insurance more than she does. She guided me in understanding exactly what each plan has to offer, and I feel more confident in deciding which one is best for me. Thank you so much, Melissa!
